One of the greatest Dutch jazz musicians ever died on November 18, 2021, trumpet and flugelhorn player Ack van Rooyen. He reached the age of 91. Not long before his passing, he collaborated with the Paradox Jazz Orchestra. Their debut album, Remembering the Skymasters, contains Ack van Rooyen’s very last recording. Now the seventeen-piece ensemble will pay tribute to the internationally renowned Dutch maestro.
Ack van Rooyen is one of the most personal and unique voices on the flugelhorn and an indispensable player in the history of European jazz. In the 1950s he immersed himself in jazz in New York together with his brother, famous arranger/composer Jerry van Rooyen. Among many others, he played with the Ramblers, and with Miles Davis and the Quincy Jones Orchestra. Saxophonist/conducter Jasper Staps founded Paradox Jazz Orchestra together with trumpeter Teus Nobel. The big band performs timeless compositions by Dutch jazz legends.
