The two vocal masters sing in the classical style khyal (‘imagination’), a vocal form characterized by luxuriant improvisations. The brothers Pandit (‘scholar’) Rajan and Sajan Mishra come from a family of virtuoso singers from the North-Indian city of Benares. In 1978 they performed outside India for the first time and ever since they have been travelling all over the world. They’ve collaborated with, among others, British minimal music composer Michael Nyman, who compares their timbres to those of Western soul singers.
‘The Mishras perform impressive feats of vocal articulation and expressive emotion’ (Gramophone).
The concert in Amsterdam is part of the “Bhairav se Bhairavi tak” world tour which has been conceptualized by Saloni Gandhi. In Europe it is being produced by Association Saptak-India.
