PAAL NILSSEN-LOVE LARGE UNIT
PAAL NILSSEN-LOVE LARGE UNIT
- Starts
- 20:30
Scandinavian ensemble full of young go-getters, led by Norwegian avant-jazz drummer Paal Nilssen-Love. ‘A fascinating listening experience for anyone willing to go below the surface’ (Downbeat).
Drummer Paal Nilssen-Love is known for his super energetic playing en improvising. He’s also one of the most prolific musicians to come out of Norway in the past 20 years. He made name with the Norwegian bands Atomic and The Thing and has collaborated intensively with leading improv musicians Ken Vandermark, Peter Brötzmann and The Ex.
The 11-piece Paal Nilssen-Love Large Unit can be compared to large improv groups such as Brötzmann’s Chicago Tentet, which made an overwhelming impression at the Bimhuis several times. The group can operate as a collective but it can also split into smaller units, such as duos and trios.
Erta Ale, the band’s first album, was named after the Ethiopian volcano and even though it does contain explosive material there’s enough space for dynamic grooves and quiet parts. Large Unit features upcoming talents from all Scandinavian countries. In this setting Paal Nilssen-Love acts as a composer, drummer, band leader, as well as a conductor.
‘The variety of moods, tempos, structures and ideas makes for a fascinating listening experience for anyone willing to go below the surface’ (Downbeat).
‘This company can function as a true unity, with room for glorious moments of individual expression, but especially as a collective cluster bomb’ (Enola.be).
The Bimhuis restaurant is open prior to the concert from 6.30 til 8.30PM (reservations via 020-7882158). After the concert, the Bimhuis Café is open (free entrance).
