Orchestre National de Jazz & Steve Lehman – Ex Machina

Celebrated New York-based saxophonist initiates interaction between orchestra and machine.

Due to the current COVID-measures, all ticket holders will receive a new ticket which accounts for the mandatory 1,5 meter distance.

The Orchestre National de Jazz (ONJ) presents Ex Machina, a creation imagined by the American saxophonist Steve Lehman and Frédéric Maurin, artistic director of the ONJ. It is the first project to explore the possibilities of interaction between the instrumentalists and the machine within a large jazz orchestra. By integrating devices in the composition process and in the soloists’ improvisations in real-time, the computer becomes, in turn, a generator of electronic orchestrations for the composers and an improvisation partner for the musicians. In this project, Steve Lehman acts as both co-composer and performer alongside the ONJ and members of his octet.

Steve Lehman has a special connection with the BIMHUIS, where he gave his first European concert with his renowned octet. Many projects and five star reviews later, he has also earned recognition outside jazz as a unique composer who merges structures from jazz, hip-hop and electronic music. With co-composer Frédéric Maurin he shares a fascination for the French masters of spectral music, Tristan Murail and Gérard Grisey. Ex Machina is the result of a collaboration with IRCAM, the leading French institute for contemporary music.
