TRIO BRAAMDEJOODEVATCHER -CHANGE THIS SONG Being highly original in doing things their own way and still touching the heart of the listener is one of the stimulating paradoxes that characterizes this piano trio. Here’s another one: playing around with the musical material, not in the slightest inhibited by any rule, yet creating solid structures. Or: keeping far away from established traditions but nevertheless referring to Monk and Tristano. In the meanwhile, three individuals are having close conversations in a spacious atmosphere. ‘Change this Song’, the brand new program of the trio, promises yet again to become a lively adventure with non-sentimental lyricism and a great sense of humor. HEBERER/MANDERSCHEID – WHAT A WONDERFUL WORLD in their program ‘What a Wonderful World’, the German trumpet player Thomas Heberer (over here mainly known from the ICP Orchestra) and bass player Dieter Manderscheid connect old fashioned swing and contemporary improvisation in an excellent way. Starting point is the music of Jelly Roll Morton and Louis Armstrong. ‘Miraculously, the music succeeds in honouring Morton and letting the identity of his melodies endure while at the same time deconstructing them entirely and subjecting the themes to the most outlandish of variations’ (The Penguin Guide to Jazz). EVELYN PETROVA – YEAR’S CYCLE All extremes that a human being can find in one year are captured in the music of accordion player and vocalist Evelyn Petrova from St. Petersburg. She’s a musician that chose the months of the year as a starting point for a suite in which her staggering instrumental virtuosity and her singing covers all emotional seasons; seductive spring moods versus severe circumstances in which her percussive vocal effects evoke an almost frightening intensity. Folk music and jazz-like improvisations with a highly personal character, an exceptional experience. NILS PETTER MOLVAER In Norwegian jazz there often has been experimented with soundscapes; think of the cool beauty and stately views of Jan Garbarek. Nils Petter Molvaer belongs to a new generation, conjuring up thin, dreamy atmospheres by blending and transforming acoustic instruments with electronics. Molvaer’s trumpet is the ‘human voice’ producing lyrical sounds filled with restrained emotion. Samples, electronic beats and other ambient elements give new meaning to it all.
