HOWARD LEVY & ANTHONY MOLINARO An exceptional combination, not just of instruments but also of temperaments: a wizard on the harmonica (a diatonic instrument but chromatically played) who shined in folk-jazz groups of Rabih Abou-Khalil and Bela Fleck and a classical pianist who got a taste for improvising. With their burning CD ‘Live (19/8)’ the duo proved that it captures the listener without any effort but also has a way of stimulating the audience in the most pleasant way: ‘As long as you can make the audience feel the rhythm, you can do a lot of heavy stuff over the top of it’, says Molinaro. CYRO BAPTISTA BEAT THE DONKEY From Wynton Marsalis to Sting, From Yo-Yo Ma to John Zorn, when they need a percussionist they think of Cyro Baptista, originally from Brazil but an indispensable part of the eclectic New York scene since many years. His own projects show not only the subtle art of music, as heard in his arrangements of classical Villa Lobos compositions, but also sparkling vitality, a clownish sense of humor and a strong feeling for theatre. A sink, a tambourine tree, PVC pipes, tap dance and ‘martial arts’: Beat the Donkey is an irresistible musical uproar.
