GLERUM EX MACHINA with as guest Misha Mengelberg Ernst Glerum-double bass, tape, Annegien Haselager-image, Misha Mengelberg-piano A tribute to the classic rhythm section. Bass and drums will be placed in a different light while being magnified as a musical engine by music and image. Samples of drum fragments that seem insignificant offer new possibilities for Ernst to respond to and play with. The film images that Annegien Haselager composed for this concert, emphasize the magnification but also the mechanic side of the music. Guest Misha Mengelberg contributes the subject ‘changes’ (chord schedule) and this topic will be examined again by uniting film and music; how changeable are changes, strictly speaking? MAARTEN ALTENA ENSEMBLE PLAYS ROBERT ASHLEY’S TAPDANCING IN THE SAND The American composer Robert Ashley, famous for his experiments with language and his television operas, wrote Tapdancing in the Sand for the Maarten Altena Ensemble in which a text of Ashley is rhythmically shadowed by the eight instruments of the MAE. In the first part we follow the simultaneously spoken English text. In the second part the same text will be heard in a Hebrew translation while the sound of the English words is still echoing in the instruments. In the third and final part only the instruments are left, reminding you of the speech but concentrated and translated in pure sound. Language transformed into enchanting music in a natural way. CVB4 + 1 Mini jazz operas, the accompaniment of literary performances, compositions for Het Nederlands Blazersensemble and the ASKO Ensemble, film scores: Corrie van Binsbergen is not only an original and exciting guitarist but also a versatile composer. In this concert, the winner of the VPRO/Boy Edgar Prize 1997/1998 manifests her expressive multi talents in a more intimate setting with master trombone player Wolter Wierbos and a brand new repertoire.
