OMAR BASHIR – TRIBUTE TO MUNIR BASHIR

Omar Bashir ud, Balint Petz guitar, Adam Hosman percussion. Special guest: special guests: Farida Mohamed Ali vocals , Mohommad Gomar Iraqi violin

Munir Bashir (1930-1997) broke new ground in Arabic music as one of the first to elevate the ud as a solo instrument. Today the ud is considered the most important solo instrument in Arabic music and Munir’s son Omar Bashir is currently the most renowned ud player. The Iraqi musician will pay tribute to his father, who was also his teacher, 20 years after Munir’s passing on 28 September 1997.

Alongside highlights from his father’s oeuvre, Omar Bashir will perform works from his own repertory and renditions of traditional Iraqi compositions. Like his father, he’s open to influences outside Arabic music. Omar studied in Hungary where he became acquainted with Western music and jazz. He collaborated with, among others, Quincy Jones and Jordi Savall.
