OLIVER LAKE & TARBABY
THE ERIC DOLPHY PROJECT
Oliver Lake altsax, Orrin Evans piano, Luques Curtis bas, Nasheet Waits drums
Energetic New York trio honors jazz innovator Eric Dolphy, who died 50 years ago. Special guest is saxophone player Oliver Lake, who has often been compared to Dolphy.
Tarbaby pays tribute to modern jazz master Eric Dolphy. 2014 marks the 50th anniversary of his passing. The pedigreed New York band welcomes saxophonist Oliver Lake, who has often been compared to Dolphy. ‘Lake not only favors the harsh and gaping arpeggios that were a Dolphy trademark, but is one of the few players to expand on the vocabulary he created on alto sax’ (Village Voice).
Tarbaby, named after an alias of boxer Sam Langford, can be as explosive as this legendary heavyweight. Pianist Orrin Evans, bassist Luques Curtis and drummer Nasheet Waits know no boundaries when it comes to improvising and they attract the best musicians from the New York scene, such as star trumpet players Ambrose Akinmusire and Nicholas Payton. They have performed at the Bimhuis before with Oliver Lake, co-founder of the World Saxophone Quartet.
At 71, Oliver Lake continues to collaborate with younger musicians. His great inspiration is the groundbreaking, progressive music of Eric Dolphy, who died accidentally in Berlin in 1964, at the age of 36. Eric Dolphy became known for his contributions to the bands of Charles Mingus and John Coltrane. He excelled on alto sax and flute and is regarded as the best soloist on bass clarinet. In his compositions and solos he bridged jazz with the classical avant-garde.
The Bimhuis restaurant is open prior to the concert from 6.30 til 8.30PM (reservations via 020-7882158). After the concert, the Bimhuis Café is open (free entrance).
