The Oktopedians celebrate their fiftieth anniversary. Many jazz and improvising musicians have participated in this workshop orchestra. It was founded in Amsterdam by the legendary saxophonist Herman de Wit. In 1974 he stood at the foundations of our venue together with, among others, Hans Dulfer, who will appear as a special guest in this anniversary concert. As always, the orchestra will play well-known and lesser known songs from the American & European songbook.

The orchestra consists of around twenty people, mostly horn players. Herman de Wit’s original goal was to make improvisation accessible to a broad audience. All musicians were welcome, and they all learned to play by ear exclusively. The current band leader is a former student of De Wit, saxophonist Arthur Heuwekemeijer. He continues the orchestra in the spirit of its original leader, who has passed away.
