The national orchestra of Malagasy sheds new light on the musical traditions of the island.
The Ny Malagasy Orkestra was founded recently as the national orchestra of Madagascar, an ensemble featuring the island’s great performers, as well as new talents. Together they shed new light on the musical heritage of the African island. Musical director is Justin Vali, a virtuoso on the string instrument valiha, the national instrument of Madagascar. Vali has collaborated with Peter Gabriel and can be heard on the album the Red Shoes by Kate Bush.
‘Justin Vali is a master craftsman, capable of sweet folk music and supercharged, brassy jazz riffs, all fully in the context of Madagascar’s jumping rhythms and sweet melodies’ (RootsWorld).
Madagascar has a rich musical tradition which has developed in relative isolation. Around 25 years ago the musical treasures were discovered and recorded by, among others, the American guitarists Henry Kaiser and David Lindley. Alongside 54 traditional instruments already recognized by ethno-musicologists the orchestra aims to reveal many more secrets.
