Nicole Mitchell and Tomeka Reid have a long-standing creative relationship, and Reid and Alexander Hawkins have collaborated in a number of contexts, but this exciting new configuration makes its first appearance in 2019.
Nicole Mitchell is regarded as the leading flute player of her generation and has won many important jazz awards and Downbeat Critics Polls. She is renowned for her big, wide sound, but also for her adventurous spirit as a band leader and her strong imagination as a composer. Currently living in California, she still has a strong relationship with the Chicago scene, where she was the president of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM).
Tomeka Reid, cellist of the year according to the Jazz Journalists Association, is one of the younger members of the Art Ensemble of Chicago, alongside veterans such as Roscoe Mitchell and Don Moye. Additionally, she leads her own bands and has become an active member of the creative music scene in New York, where she currently lives.
Alexander Hawkins has performed at the BIMHUIS various times, playing ethio-jazz with Mulatu Astatke and South African jazz with Louis Moholo-Moholo as well as hardcore improv with Han Bennink. It indicates the broad range of the pianist, who is also regarded as one of the most interesting Hammond organ players of our time.
