NICHOLAS PAYTON TRIO
Nicholas Payton trompet, Lenny White drums, Vicente Archer bas
Trumpet player Nicholas Payton surprises everybody with his current trio. The Grammy winner, and former protégé of Wynton Marsalis, sounds more liberated than ever.
He often uses one hand to play trumpet while he uses the other to hit the keys of the Fender Rhodes. Instead of the traditionally tinged neo bop and pyrotechnics you might expect from a New Orleans based ‘young lion’, he presents a loose mixture of jazz, funk, R&B, rock and soul.
‘Genres are like colors to me. When I’m trying to paint a picture, the idea is not to limit myself’, says Payton. Drummer in his trio is Lenny White, who can be heard on Miles Davis’ revolutionary album Bitches Brew.
