In recent years, the Norwegian jazz scene has proved itself to be highly innovative. Such record labels as Smalltown Supersound, Rune Grammofon and Jazzland have released many unique bands that appeal to fans of jazz, dance, rock and electronica. During the two day event New Ground Norway the Bimhuis and NPS Radio 6 present a selection of the most exciting Norwegian artists from different generations.
The futuristic jazz of keyboard player Bugge Wesseltoft has set the tone for bands as well as club DJ’s. Since the 1980s vocalist Sidsel Endresen has been a convincing performer in every genre she has touched, from avant-garde to soul. She will perform with the exceptionally adventurous saxophone player Håkon Kornstad. Jazzmob, which was founded in 1998, operates in changing line-ups with saxophone player Jon Klette as a constant presence. The band is one of Norway’s most energetic and hard-swinging live bands. Their music is a thrilling mixture of hard bop, prog-fusion and free jazz.
With her unique voice Mari Kvien Brunvoll is the current live sensation of the Norwegian underground. Her highly individual style contains elements of jazz, electropop, and country blues. She employs live sampling and electronics, while accompanying herself on acoustic instruments such as zither, kalimba and glockenspiel.
