New CrossCurrents goes back to the time where the American jazz pianist and composer Lennie Tristano developed a concept of free improvisation from rhythmic and harmonic ‘cross currents’. He was probably the first jazz musician who did this. The historical significance of this form of improvisation can only be judged afterwards. Because of Tristano’s ambitions and achievements, the jazz and improvised music has been divided into an endless amount of stylistic and individual views on improvisation. With the acquired knowledge of the past fifty years, the CrossCurrent musicians have united to rearrange compositions from the Tristano school.
