NED ROTHENBERG TRIO THE FELL CLUTCH

Ned Rothenberg-alto saxophone, clarinet, bass clarinet, Stomu Takeishi-bass guitar, Tony Buck-drums

The New Yorks alto saxophonist Ned Rothenberg built a reputation with his solo concerts in which he, elaborating on the techniques of Evan Parker, developed his own musical language. His present group The Fell Clutch – ‘a kind of next-generation jam band’ – with bass guitarist Stomu Takeishi (Cuong Vu, Myra Melford a.o. ) and drummer Tony Buck (The Necks a.o. ) performed together for the first time during the monthly sessions in John Zorn’s club The Stone. ‘It’s all improvised, and even though the pieces are built from loose but hypnotic rhythmic schemes, there’s nothing aimless or indulgent about the performances, which reveal a stunning degree of interaction… the perfect setting for Rothenberg’s mesmerizing, interlocking phrases.’ (Chicago Reader).
