Nasheet Waits Equality Quartet

Energetic acoustic jazz by a supergroup led by American drum hero Nasheet Waits, a protégé of Max Roach and a core member of Jason Moran’s Bandwagon.

This concert is broadcasted on Bimhuis Radio

Nasheet Waits followed in the footsteps of his father, legendary jazz drummer Freddie Waits. At the request of his other important mentor, Max Roach, he became part of the unique percussion ensemble M’BOOM, proving his extraordinary talent performing with star players such as Tony Williams and Ginger Baker. Later on he joined the Andrew Hill Quartet, co-founded The Bandwagon together with pianist Jason Moran and played in Charles Lloyd’s quartet.

At the BIMHUIS the New York-raised drummer will perform with his Equality Quartet. The recent album Between Nothingness and Infinity includes original compositions by band leader Waits and double bassist Mark Helias alongside works by Charlie Parker, Andrew Hill and Sam Rivers. For his concert at the BIMHUIS, Nasheet will bring bassist Eric Revis.

‘Nasheet Waits’s light touch, propulsive swing and insider’s rhythms have been a stamp of quality for cutting edge jazz since his recording debut in 1993’ (Financial Times).

‘Nasheet Waits is at the top of his game. A typical musician’s example, the New Yorker is the perfect partner, as the list of his record shows: Andrew Hill, Jason Moran, William Parker, David Murray, Wadada Leo Smith, Mark Turner, Vijay Iyer , Geri Allen, Michel Portal … jazz has benefited from his chops, polyrhythmic and conscious of melody’ (Libération).
