Naïssam Jalal Trio: Quest of the Invisible

Flutist and singer oscillates between shadow and light, melody and groove, silence and trance.

Naïssam Jalal reaches an exceptional balance between flute, ney and her enchanting voice. For the Quest of the Invisible, she has selected melodic themes that can be very simple or much more complex. Silence has a central place, while the rhythm leads to trance in a repetitive, hypnotic form. For this project, Naïssam Jalal improvises with pianist Leonardo Montana and double bassist Claude Tchamitchian in a collaborative search for the divine invisible.

Born in Paris of Syrian parents, Naïssam Jalal’s development in Aarabic classical music started at a very early age. She studies in Cairo and played with such greats as violist Abdo Dagher and keyboardist Fathy Salama. Back in Paris, she explored many different directions from jazz to tango and from rap to afrobeat, collaborating with the likes of Fatoumata Diawara and Hamid Drake. She composed for a variety of settings, including string quartet and symphony orchestra.
