New international trio with renowned improvising musicians from Russia, The Netherlands and Germany. Featuring pianist Simon Nabatov, ‘one of the most complete virtuosos on his instrument’ (de Volkskrant).
Together they have more than 100 years of stage experience and this year they are performing as a trio for the very first time: Russian pianist Simon Nabatov, Dutch saxophone player Luc Houtkamp and German drummer Martin Blume are established names in the international jazz and improvised music scene. Now they will come together for an intense and adventurous encounter.
Simon Nabatov is internationally praised as ‘one of the most complete virtuosos on his instrument, with a style that encompasses the whole of jazz history’ (de Volkskrant). The classically trained pianist, who lives in Cologne and New York, has a special relationship with the Dutch improvised music scene and has already formed duos with Ernst Reijseger and Han Bennink.
Luc Houtkamp leads various ensembles which aim to blur the boundaries between composition and improvisation and which have an important role for computer interaction. In 2004 he won the VPRO/Boy Edgar Prize, receiving praise for his unique style as a tenor and alto saxophonist. He has formed among others the POW Ensemble, featuring renowned Dutch improvisers.
Martin Blume has been active as a drummer since 1983 collaborating with well-known improvising musicians all over the world, including Peter Brotzmann, Lol Coxhill and Ken Vandermark. He formed various ensembles such as FOURinONE with Luc Houtkamp. ‘Blume listens with intensity and punctuates decisively’ (The Wire).
The Bimhuis restaurant is open prior to the concert from 6.30 til 8.30PM (reservations via 020-7882158). After the concert, the Bimhuis Café is open (free entrance).
