MYRA MELFORD’S SNOWY EGRET

Afterwards DJ Welmoed at the café

Myra Melford piano/melodica, Ron Miles trompet, Liberty Ellman gitaar, Stomu Takeishi bas, Ted Poor drums

Pianist Myra Melford plays with a motley collection of musicians in her current band Snowy Egret. These unique, leading New York players can handle everything, which is a precondition when it comes to Melford’s multifaceted music. Her fascinating, narrative compositions have previously earned her a Composer of the Year title by the Jazz Journalists Association. In 2013 she received a prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship, following in the footsteps of her mentor Henry Threadgill.

Myra Melford’s piano playing links blues, classical and eastern music plus a myriad of other musical currents. Since 1990 she has released over 20 albums as a band leader and has created performances with dance and film. Snowy Egret has evolved out of her project inspired by writer Eduardo Galeano’s Memory of Fire Trilogy, a challenging alternative history of the Americas. The cultural wealth of the American continent informs Snowy Egret’s music as well, including the new pieces that will be performed at the Bimhuis.

‘A sensitively scorching pianist’ (Village Voice).

‘A superlative example of how to create and sustain an emotionally charged mood that loosely recalls a Coltrane or Dolphy fanfare without falling into cliché… her compositional style has its own signature’ (Jazzwise).

The Bimhuis restaurant is open prior to the concert from 6.30 til 8.30PM (reservations via 020-7882158). After the concert, the Bimhuis Café is open (free entrance).
