MULLIGAN-BAKER PROJECT

JAN WILLEM VAN DER HAM, FELICITY PROVAN, RAOUL VAN DER WEIDE, GEORGE HADOW
MIXING MEMORY & DESIRE
JanWillem van der Ham bariton saxophone, Felicity Provan trumpet, Raoul van der Weide bass, George Hadow drums

Ode to the innovative
jazz of Gerry Mulligan en Chet Baker circa 1952-’53, with faithful ‘remakes’ as
well as new variations and original compositions.

Gerry Mulligan brought the baritone sax into
the spotlights, the instrument often limited to a supporting role in jazz
orchestras. In the early 1950s he celebrated success with his pianoless
quintet, a novelty in that day. The absence of a piano gave space for exciting
harmony playing between Mulligan and trumpeter Chet Baker.

JanWillem van der Ham will pick up the
baritone for his Mulligan-Baker Project, an Amsterdam group with a line-up
similar to that of the Gerry Mulligan/Chet Baker Quartet. Original material
from 1952-’53 will be approached in various ways: there will be authentic
‘remakes’ alongside contemporary versions (‘extensions’) and matching original
compositions (‘counterparts’). The Mulligan-Baker Project has recorded its
first album past summer,
Mixing memory and desire: The Mulligan-Baker Project, which will be presented tonight.

The Bimhuis restaurant is open prior to the concert from 6.30 til 8.30PM (reservations via 020-7882158). After the concert, the Bimhuis Café is open (free entrance).
