ALIM QASIMOV & MICHEL GODARD & SIMDI ENSEMBLE

TICKETS

Morgenland Festival Amsterdam presents Eastern music and improvisation featuring, among others, renowned singer Alim Qasimov from Azerbaijan and master tuba player Michael Godard.

Alim Qasimov is being hailed as ‘simply one of the greatest singers alive’ (New York Times). He is the best known performer of the Mugham, from Azerbaijan, a complex musical form requiring extraordinary skills. Its remarkable beauty is conveyed in the classical, ancient poetry that is recited through singing.

French tuba player Michel Godard is counted among the world’s best improvisers, but he’s also a phenomenon in period music because of his inimitable playing of the medieval serpent. He regularly collaborates with Eastern musicians such as Kudsi Erguner and Rabih Abou-Khalil. His recent album Eternal Love features the Turkish Şimdi Ensemble.

This concert will be a true event, the Dutch première of the duo Qasimov and Godard. In the first set they will perform with two musicians from Azerbaijan: Qasimov’s musical companion Ra’Uf Islamov on kamançhe, and jazz pianist Salman Gambarov, who garnered success at last year’s pilot of Morgenland Festival Amsterdam in collaboration with German jazz pianist Florian Weber.

During the second set Michel Godard will be accompanied by three members of the Şimdi Ansemble: founder and harp player Şirin Pancaroğlu, Bora Uymaz (vocals) and Mehmet Yalgın (kamançhe).
