MORGENLAND MEETS THE DUTCH SCENE: TESSERA ENSEMBLE
WITH A.O. TONY OVERWATER, KINAN AZMEH, BRAM VAN SAMBEEK, RIMA KHCHEICH, JASSER HAJ YOUSSEF, TINEKE POSTMA
CONCERT WITHOUT INTERMISSION
Syrian clarinet player Kinan Azmeh and double bassist Tony Overwater
co-lead the Tessera Ensemble, founded especially for Morgenland Festival
Amsterdam.
Clarinet player and composer Kinan Azmeh has been
praised for his intensely soulful playing by New York Times, among
others. Earlier this year he performed at the Bimhuis with his soul mate
Eric Vloeimans. Dutch bassist Tony Overwater has a passion for Arabic
music, which he has studied intensively. He regularly performs in the
Middle East, with Lebanese vocalist Rima Khcheich.
The word
Tessera is of Byzantine origin and refers to the smallest part of a
mosaic. The Tessera Ensemble is a musical encounter between the maqam
style, the complex rhythms of the Middle East, and the harmony and
polyphony of Western music.
In the ensemble, nine Dutch and
international top musicians will express their individual musical
beauty. Together they will develop a new sound. Their intensive musical
exchange started long before this encounter, via internet. The week
before the concert they will come together to rehearse.
