MIKE REED’S PEOPLE, PLACES & THINGS featuring ART HOYLE, JULIAN PRIESTER, IRA SULLIVAN
Art Hoyle trumpet/flugelhorn, Julian Priester trombone, Ari Brown tenor saxophone, Greg Ward alto saxophone, Tim Haldeman tenor saxophone, Jeb Bishop trombone, Jason Roebke bass, Mike Reed drums
With his project People, Places and Things drummer Mike Reed rediscovers the jazz that blossomed in his hometown Chicago from 1954 to 1960. The band plays obscure pieces by composers that include Sun Ra and Wilbur Campbell and performs with veterans who left their marks on the bop and jazz from the ‘windy city’. Tonight’s guests are Ari Brown (AACM), Art Hoyle (Jazz Messengers) and Julian Priester, who played trombone with Duke Ellington as well as Sunn O))). ‘It combines the bluesy brawn of Chicago’s postbop past… with thoroughly present-day improvisational vocabularies’ (Chicago Reader).
Prior to the concert, from 20:00, Larry Kart will conduct a public interview with Art Hoyle, Julian Priester and Ari Brown.
Chicago and Sun Ra veterans Hoyle and Priester, together with AACM mainstay Brown, will share their stories, experiences and ideas with the audience.
