America’s most windy city has a rich tradition of avant-garde jazz, from the Art Ensemble of Chicago to Ken Vandermark. Several young exponents perform at Bimhuis this month. Influences of film music resound in the compositions of drummer Mike Reed. The subtle and spooky sound of his Loose Assembly contrasts with the explosive style of Dave Rempis, whose Percussion Quartet alternately plays free jazz and afro beat. The talented Chicagoans are joined on stage by some of Holland’s finest improvisers.
