MICHIEL SCHEEN QUARTET
Ab Baars-tenor sax, clarinet, Michiel Scheen-piano, Ernst Glerum-bass, Han Bennink-drums
It was great news for the world of Dutch jazz that after an absence of some time, pianist Michiel Scheen was back on the scene, full time. In this 5 star formation he searches for new possibilities of ensemble play, with ‘bouncing swing, exploring impro and sincere lyricism’. The influence of Monk, still one of his references, has been evolved and steadily developed which inspired The Wire to review his CD ‘Dance, my Dear?’: ‘In concept, almost everything on this totally outstanding release seems new.’
