MICHAEL MOORE
FEAT. WOLTER WIERBOS, WILBERT DE JOODE, MICHAEL VATCHER
LOCATION: FELIX MERITIS, KEIZERSGRACHT 324, AMSTERDAM
Michael Moore altsax/klarinet, Wolter Wierbos trombone, Wilbert de Joode bas, Michael Vatcher drums
Alto sax and clarinet player Michael Moore is world renowned for
his gorgeous tone and musical imagination. He will be giving a concert
with three celebrities of the Dutch improv school: Wolter Wierbos
(trombone), Wilbert de Joode (bass) and Michael Vatcher (drums).
This concert is part of the BIMHUIS AT FELIX &FOAM, a series of adventuresome summer concerts at Felix &Foam, Keizersgracht 324, hosted by the Bimhuis.
The
finesse of American jazz, the idiosyncrasy of European improvisational
music and the anarchy of New Dutch Swing all converge in Michael Moore,
alto saxophonist, clarinetist and key figure in the Amsterdam jazz
scene. He constantly provides new impulses, whether as a composing
member of the ICP Orchestra or as leader of his own bands.
Moore
recently attracted a great deal of attention with his CD albums entitled
Amsterdam and Rotterdam on his own Ramboy label. It is music that
floats, balancing between sheer beauty and intimate improvisation. The
artist George Braque serves as an important source of inspiration,
according to Moore. “The somber sky and hints of movement provide
melody- and textural ideas to use as starting points. Visual arts are
not made up of time; in these pieces the final form the music takes is
determined by the musicians.”
For this concert Moore has opted
for a unique selection of celebrities from the Dutch improv school.
Total mavericks who dare to turn their instruments upside down and
inside out, take them apart and put them back together in a completely
authentic way. And without losing sight of the love of aesthetic
qualities and intense ensemble playing. They are trombone player Wolter
Wierbos, double bassist and drummer Michael Vatcher.
‘Few
composer-improvisers can charm a listener like Michael Moore. His cool,
silky tone, a bit dry, but not unpleasantly so, attracts your ear to his
playing. His compositions seem effortlessly lyrical, but there’s always
some odd little touch to grab your attention: a line that, it suddenly
occurs to you, has been progressing for an inordinately long time; an
ambiguously suspended ending; or an unforeseen change in direction that
takes you off guard.’ (Pointofdeparture.org)
