Metropole Orkest Big Band led by Marcus Wyatt

The Metropole Orchestra Big Band previously honored American jazz legends Oliver Nelson, Quincy Jones and Thelonious Monk. Now it’s time for a complete genre: South African jazz. Directed by trumpeter and conductor Marcus Wyatt, the orchestra presents a subsection of this beautiful and richly varied genre. Featuring music of, among others, Dudu Pukwana, Abdullah Ibrahim, Johnny Dyani, Winston Mankunku, Bheki Mseleku, Hugh Masekela, Jonas Gwangwa and Zim Ngqawana.  Special guest is vocalist Siyabonga Mthembu.

Siyabonga Mthembu is the curator of ‘Indaba Is’, a compilation of avant-garde- and jazzcollectives from Johannesburg, released by Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood Recording in 2021. Siyabonga is also the leadsinger of both Brothers Move On and Shabaka and the Ancestors, who released the album ‘We Are Sent Here By History’ on Impulse Records in March 2020.

South African trumpeter, composer and bandleader Marcus Wyatt performed over the whole world and collaborated an impressive list of top musicians, including Manu Dibango, Abdullah Ibrahim en Miriam Makeba, Maria Schneider, John Faddis, Bheki Mseleku, Lionel Loueke and Steve Turre. In 2016 he won the South African Music Award (SAMA) together with his ZAR Orchestra, in the best jazz album category.

This concert is part of Afro Vibes, the annual festival for contemporary theater, dance music and design from Africa. The festival introduces art from upcoming and established current African creators and artists to The Netherlands.
