Mazaher: The Wisdom of the Zar
Line-up TBA
Mazaher is known for its energetic performances. This ensemble from Egypt plays music inspired by the zar ritual from the Horn of Africa, a tradition that has almost completely disappeared. The music differs markedly from other Egyptian styles: polyrhythmic layering and uplifting antiphonal singing are at the heart of this extraordinary repertoire. Their faces marked by time, the women of Mazaher display an undiminished zest for life, dancing and singing their words of wisdom.
‘The zar seeks to soothe and cleanse the human spirit; it cures people of spiritual discomfort,’ says lead singer Om Sameh. In addition to various frame drums, the ensemble members use the tanbura, a lyre-like instrument, and the manjur, a leather belt with rattling goat hooves attached to it. The lyrics are about love for nature and for the divine. Mazaher is deeply dedicated to keeping this unique cultural heritage alive.
