MATTHEW SHIPP TRIO

Matthew Shipp piano, Michael Bisio bas, Whit Dickey drums

Matthew Shipp follows in the footsteps of ‘black mystery pianists’ such as Thelonious Monk and Sun Ra. Jazz, blues and avant-garde come together in adventurous trio improvisations.

Matthew Shipp places himself in a lineage he calls ‘black mystery school pianists’, which originated with Thelonious Monk and includes Andrew Hill and Sun Ra. His playing is rooted in jazz, blues and gospel, but he extends musical boundaries through improvisation. Either consciously or subconsciously he treads in such territories as classical piano, minimalism, avant-rock and electronic music.

Matthew Shipp played with jazz adventurers David S. Ware and Roscoe Mitchell. He uses his own compositions and standards as springboards for intense improvisations. Recently he caused a stir in the press as well; on the popular music blog Talkhouse he surprised friends and enemies with his candid critiques. This year he released a new album with his trio, called The Root of Things.

‘Matthew Shipp is playing piano, and the floor is shaking… turbulent music from a turbulent, perplexing soul, one of the most imaginative and influential figures in free jazz today’ (JazzTimes).
