MATTHEW SHIPP

Matthew Shipp-piano solo

Matthew Shipp is the piano giant of the New York ‘downtown’ improvisors, a compelling musician that makes the piano sound like a complete orchestra or an extensive percussion section. He became known with the groups of tenor player David S. Ware and then did a remarkable solo entree which led to the New York Times claiming him to be the most important avant-garde piano player since Cecil Taylor. His impressive technique enables him to turn every musical idea directly into a powerful shape.
