MATT DARIAU PARADOX TRIO & THEODOSII SPASSOV

Matt Darriau-alto saxophone, soprano saxophone, clarinet, kaval, gaida, Brad Shepik-guitar, Rufus Cappadocia-cello, Theodosii Spassov-kaval

The Bulgarian composer and flutist Theodosii Spassov is one of the key figures in Bulgarian music. He is an unequalled player of the kaval (shepherd’s flute), personally introduced this instrument in the world of jazz and developed it from then and there. The bridge that Spassov builds between Bulgarian tradition and jazz shows in the meeting with the New York Paradox Trio. This formation revolving around Klezmatics clarinet player Matt Dariau uses Bulgarian folk songs and instruments like the gaida (bagpipes) and dumbek (vase drum) as a foundation for exciting and urban Balkan jazz. ‘Spassov invented a new music genre'(Newsweek Magazine).
