Mats Eilertsen Trio ft. Harmen Fraanje & Thomas Strønen

Mats Eilertsen bass, Harmen Fraanje piano, Thomas Strønen drums

The double bass is more than just an accompanying instrument for Mats Eilertsen. In his trio he employs both classical and experimental techniques to create a solid foundation, to which pianist Harmen Fraanje and drummer Thomas Strønen react in subtle ways. The result is part lyrical and part atmospheric music that sounds different than you would expect from a jazz trio.

Mats Eilertsen is an in-demand bassist in his native Norway and has a special connection with The Netherlands: at the BIMHUIS he has already performed in the groups of Wolfert Brederode and Joost Lijbaart. In his trio he plays with Dutch pianist Harmen Fraanje and Norwegian drummer Thomas Strønen. Their work was recorded beautifully on the album And Then Comes the Night op ECM Records, that will appear early in 2019.

‘Each idea, each nuance in the music, is an instant distillation of countless possibilities shaped to the requirements of the moment, so perhaps it comes as no surprise that what emerges is often profound and always rich in meaning’ (JazzWise).
