MATHIAS EICK QUINTET

Mathias Eick trompet, Håkon Aase viool, Andreas Ulvo piano, Audun Erlien bas, Torstein Lofthus drums

Lyrical jazz and folk songs are important influences for Norwegian trumpeter and musical omnivore Mathias Eick, known from Jaga Jazzist and Trondheim Jazz Orchestra.

Norwegian trumpeter Mathias Eick is a jack-of-all-trades. Now in his thirties, he paid his dues playing rock and jazz festivals in the forward-leaning formation Jaga Jazzist. Alongside trumpet, Eick plays guitar, bass and vibes. With his lyrical, thoughtful style he takes his cue from icons such as Chet Baker, Kenny Wheeler and Enrico Rava.

For his most recent album Midwest, released on the ECM label, Eick took inspiration from the heritage of Norwegians who migrated in big numbers to the United States in the late 19th century. The songs on the album lean strongly towards folk and ambient. ‘This is road music, cinematic in scope, in which the rolling hills are easy to imagine and the sky seems to go on forever’ (Downbeat).
