The Matangi Quartet presents new compositions by well-known jazz musicians from The Netherlands and Flanders, alongside music by Louis Andriessen. Featuring a guest appearance by pianist Michiel Braam.
Jazzics = Classics + Jazz: with this exciting project the Matangi Quartet will celebrate its 15th anniversary at the Bimhuis. The string quartet will perform mainly new compositions by excellent musicians/composers from Dutch and Flemish jazz. The concert opens with compositions by pianist Michiel Braam, who will perform with the quartet.
Jazzics contains more new compositions by renowned pianists, such as Wolfert Brederode, Martin Fondse and Jef Neve, who has been dubbed ‘the crown prince of Belgian jazz’. The program also contains Sivuca by violist Oene van Geel, with whom the quartet has collaborated before, and the classic Facing Death by Louis Andriessen.
Inspired by bebop pioneer Charlie Parker, composer Louis Andriessen wrote Facing Death. Its central theme is the speed at which Parker played his alto saxophone, which made him world famous. ‘He lived his life in a hurry, which explains the title’, said Andriessen in an interview. Facing Death references the famous Parker composition Ornithology.

Louis Andriessen: Facing Death (1990), for amplified string quartet
Oene van Geel: Sivuca, from Brazilian Heroes (2009)
