Saxophone player Matana Roberts thrills jazz and other audiences with Coin Coin, a confrontational, yet wonderful account which reflects on Afro-American history. She managed to find information on her family lineage by examining old records of the sale of slaves.,which includes Marie Therese ‘Coin Coin’ Metoyer, a central character in this theatrical musical piece filled with poetry and intense solos, orchestral passages and fiery alto saxophone solos. ‘A major talent… expect to hear her name more and more in the coming years’ (The Wire).
