Marquis Hill – New Gospel Revisited
Friday18 March 2022

Marquis Hill has developed into a phenomenal trumpeter playing the Chicago jazz scene. Since moving to New York, he has gained recognition for connecting jazz to contemporary beats and breaks. On the album New Gospel Revisited he freshly reinterprets his debut recording New Gospel (2011). His current band stars the upcoming vibraphonist Joel Ross, who recently played here with his own band.

Marquis Hill has built a reputation for synthesizing what he describes as the essential elements of the African-American creative heritage including jazz, soul, house and hip-hop. At a young age he was already recognized as one of the most promising American jazz players. He won the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Trumpet Competition, and he topped the Downbeat Critics Poll in the Rising Star Trumpet category. For three years he was part of the band of bass guitar legend Marcus Miller.
