MARQUIS HILL BLACKTET
Marquis Hill trumpet, Josh Johnson alto saxophone, Joel Ross vibraphone, Jeremiah Hunt bass, Makaya McCraven drums
Trumpeter Marquis Hill leaves a great impression with his album The Way We Play, on which he connects jazz to spoken word, hip-hop and contemporary beats and breaks. In his Blacktet he plays with musicians from his native Chicago, such as drummer and regular collaborator Makaya McCraven.
These musicians can improvise on dazzling grooves, as recorded on McCraven’s breakthrough album In the Moment, but they also translate standards to the present, from classics such as Maiden Voyage and Straight no Chaser, to more obscure compositions by Carmell Jones en Donald Byrd.
Marquis Hill is currently one of the most promising American jazz players. He topped the Downbeat Critics Poll 2016 in the Rising Star Trumpet category and he won the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Trumpet Competition 2014. He currently lives in New York.
