MARC RIBOT TRIO
WITH HENRY GRIMES, CHAD TAYLOR
AFTERWARDS DJ TIM PARSNIP AT THE CAFE
Marc Ribot gitaren, Henry Grimes bas, Chad Taylor drums
Guitarist Marc Ribot (of Tom Waits and Elvis Costello fame) summons the spirit of Albert Ayler in his trio with Ayler-bassist Henry Grimes and Chicago Underground-drummer Chad Taylor.
Marc Ribot may be best known for his guitar playing with Tom Waits and Elvis Costello, but as a band leader he is one of the greats in downtown jazz. A case in point is his week-long concert series in the jazz temple Village Vanguard. This year a highlight of these concerts was released on the CD Marc Ribot Trio Live at the Village Vanguard, ‘a searing venture through the avant-garde that leaves room for graceful melody’, according to L.A. Times.
In this trio Ribot plays with acoustic bassist Henry Grimes, who played The Village Vanguard in the 1960s with mythical sax player Albert Ayler. After three decades of absence he reappeared in Ribot’s band Spiritual Unity, which played the Bimhuis in 2005. The drummer of that group, Chad Taylor (Chicago Underground Duo), also plays in this trio. The repertory contains compositions by Coltrane and Ayler, which serve as springboards alternately restrained and driven improvisations. ‘Spiritually riveting’ (Downbeat).
The Bimhuis restaurant is open prior to the concert from 6.30 til 8.30PM (reservations via 020-7882158). After the concert, the Bimhuis Café is open (free entrance).
