His guitar can sound either smooth or biting; still, you can always tell it is Marc Ribot, whether he is playing with John Zorn or Norah Jones. His new group is named after the album Sun Ship by John Coltrane. Ribot improvises on Coltrane’s whimsical themes, collaborating with guitarist Mary Halvorson, bass player Jason Ajemian and drummer Chad Taylor. ‘His vision for the band descends from multiple stylistic platforms: not just polyrhythmic post-bop, but also Cuban music, psychedelic surf-rock, maybe a bit of vintage punk’ (New York Times).
