Creating raw licks that are never obvious, guitar player Marc Ribot always grabs you by the throat, whether he plays with John Zorn, Elvis Costello or Tom Waits. As a self-confessed outsider in jazz he nevertheless headlined the New York jazz temple Village Vanguard for a week last summer, joining a select club of band leaders. ‘The quintessential downtown guitarist’ (The Guardian) has torn the roof off the Bimhuis several times already with his energetic electric improv trio Ceramic Dog, in which multi-instrumentalist Shahzad Ismaily and drummer Ches Smith always manage to surprise.

presents one weekend in February with three concerts by kindred bands
from uptown Chicago and downtown New York. Uptown/Downtown stands for
metropolitan, progressive and raw, with roots in US improv- and jazz
