MARC CARY FOCUS TRIO
Marc Cary keys, Rahsaan Carter bass, Sameer Gupta drums
Energetic, organic mix of jazz with African and Indian rhythms by the trio of pianist Marc Cary, number 1 Rising Star Keyboard in the Downbeat Critics Poll 2014.
The energy and the cultural wealth of Harlem, New York resonate in the newest music of pianist Marc Cary, number 1 in the Downbeat Critics Poll 2014 in the Rising Star Keyboard category. With his Focus Trio he strikes an organic balance between jazz harmonies and rhythms from Africa and India. Drummer and tabla player Sameer Gupta plays an essential role in this.
Almost 25 years ago Marc Cary performed at the Bimhuis for the first time, as a young sideman of Betty Carter. He became known for his piano playing with singer Abbey Lincoln, to whom he recently dedicated a full solo-album (For the Love of Abbey, 2013). He played with Roy Hargrove and Stefon Harris, as well as with hip-hop artists such as Q-Tip and house producers such as Louie Vega. Alongside piano he excels at Fender Rhodes and analogue synthesizer.
‘Cary shows how creatively he can stretch cool piano-jazz swingers over complex and cutting-edge rhythms, producing music that sounds old and new at once’ (The Guardian).
‘Marc is a great musician! He’s deep in the tradition but at the same time always forward thinking’ (Robert Glasper).
The Bimhuis restaurant is open prior to the concert from 6.30 til 8.30PM (reservations via 020-7882158). After the concert, the Bimhuis Café is open (free entrance).
