The voice of Manuel Moreno Maya ‘El Pele’ (1954) soars to lonely heights and plumbs the deepest depths. The singer from Córdoba was unanimously described in superlatives by the Spanish flamenco press as, ‘a flamenco beast in the wild’, ‘ a voice as warm as old copper.’ El Pele is the embodiment of the classical gypsy voice; intuitive, and unpolished, sometimes so personal it hurts. He moves through every conceivable palos (style) of flamenco be it serious or playful, singing with unprecedented ease and an unequalled sense of timing. He totally blew away David Bowie and Prince with his raw laments. In the eighties together with guitarist Vicente Amigo he embarked on his explorations of new styles of singing. Very little was heard from El Pele after the success of his previous album ‘Canto’ But the singer is busy making a glorious comeback. His is a timeless voice: one that breaks loose, tears apart, fanning out over all our emotions. They will be performing pieces from his latest CD ‘8 guitarras…y un piano’.
