MAJID BEKKAS – PAUL VAN KEMENADE – STEVKO BUSCH – MARKKU OUNASKARI

Paul van Kemenade alto sax, Majid Bekkas oud/guembri/vocals, Stevko Busch piano, Markku Ounaskari drums

The expressive, bluesy sound of alto saxophonist Paul van Kemenade fits comfortably within any musical setting, as he proves time and time again by playing with countless musicians from many genres. Eye-catcher in his new band is Majid Bekkas, a celebrated musician in his home country of Morocco. With his hypnotic way of singing and playing of traditional stringed instruments, such as oud and guembri, he embodies the gnawa, the mystical, trance-inducing folk music style from the Sahara. He has previously performed with jazz luminaries such as Archie Shepp and Joachim Kühn. The new quartet features German pianist Stevko Busch and Finnish percussionist Markku Ounaskari, who is renowned for his melodic drumming style.

This concert is part of the Red Light Jazz Festival, from 29 until 31 May at various locations in Amsterdam.
