Dutch female trumpet player Maite Hontelé causes a sensation in the salsa scene, which is traditionally dominated by men. Currently she lives in Colombia, where she is recognized everywhere she goes. South-Americans love her ‘new sound of old school salsa’, in which she mixes old styles with contemporary influences. This month the trumpet player premières her full Colombian band in The Netherlands.
Maite grew up with her father’s salsa records. She studied latin and jazz at the Rotterdam Conservatory and toured with famous groups such as Buena Vista Social Club. In recent years she played with, among others, Ruben Blades, Yuri Buenaventura, Issac Delgado, Sonora Ponceña and Oscar D’Leon. She currently plays most large festivals in Colombia with her own band and she has performed in Mexico, the US, South Korea and Israel. In her native country The Netherlands she is a rising star.
In april 2013 her new album ‘Déjame Así’ was released, with special guest
Oscar D’León, one of the biggest salsa-stars alive. This album was nominated
for a ‘Premio Shock’, Colombia’s most important music-award.
