Luke Stewart’s Silt Trio

Free grooves and rhythms by influential players from the American underground.

The leading jazz magazine Downbeat selected him as one of the ’25 for the Future’: key figures of the current generation who will determine the future of jazz. In his current Silt Trio, the influential bassist leans towards spiritual jazz in the tradition of Albert Ayler. This entails free rhythms and grooves, with undertones of the blues from his birthplace Mississippi. And plenty of improvisational room for his partners on saxophone and drums.

Luke Stewart previously appeared on our stage alongside the acclaimed saxophonist James Brandon Lewis, and in the group Irreversible Entanglements with poet Moor Mother. Out of his residence Washington D.C., Luke Stewart has been involved in music in different guises: as a double bassist and electric bassist, but also as a saxophonist, producer, radio host and organizer. With Silt Trio he recorded the 2022 album The Bottom on Cuneiform Records.
