LOUIS MOHOLO & AMSTERDAM FRIENDS

Sean Bergin-tenor saxophone, alto saxophone, Tobias Delius-tenor saxophone, Misha Mengelberg-piano, Tristan Honsinger-cello, Ernst Glerum-bass, Louis Moholo-drums, with special guest Han Bennink-drums

Louis Moholo (Cape Town, 1940) is one of the great jazz drummers, pioneer of a free style, but highly supportive and recognizable in every context. In 1964 he landed in Europe as a member of Chris McGregor’s legendary ‘Blue Notes’, where the group stirred up the scene. After wanderings with Roswell Rudd, Archie Shepp and Steve Lacy he settled in London from which he collaborated with all the important improvisors through the years and left a strong mark on the music of several decades. Moholo has been heard many times at the Bimhuis with fellow country men like Harry Miller, Dudu Pukwana, Johnny Dyani, Sean Bergin but also with ICP-musicians, Kees Hazevoet, Tristan Honsinger and Curtis Clark. Since he returned to Cape Town after an exile of almost forty years he can not be heard very often in Europe anymore. This makes this special reunion in an all star line up an event of great importance.
