LOU DONALDSON QUARTET feat. DR. LONNIE SMITH

Since he formed the ‘frontline’ of the first Jazz Messengers in the mid 50’s, alto saxophonist Lou Donaldson recorded dozens of albums for the legendary Blue Note label. He did that with Thelonious Monk, Milt Jackson, Art Blakey, Jimmy Smith and he also produced a series of albums under his own name. Nowadays, they belong to the most played recordings in the world of jazz dance. Donaldson’s with blues pervaded performance has fundamentally remained the same, that is why his concerts can become a time travelling experience. ‘You are led to believe that you are in a shady club in Harlem in the 50’s’, is what De Volkskrant wrote about his previous Bimhuis performance. Again this time, the 77-year old saxophonist brings with him the fabulous hammond organ player Dr. Lonnie Smith.
