Since he was the front line of the first Jazz Messengers with Clifford Brown in the mid 50’s, alto saxophonist Lou Donaldson recorded dozens of albums for the legendary Blue Note label. He did this under his own name but also with Thelonious Monk, Milt Jackson, Art Blakey and Jimmy Smith. Those recordings are now frequently played in the world of jazz dance. Donaldson’s sound is drenched in blues and the essence of it never changed. ‘You find yourself in an obscure Harlem bar in the 50’s’, wrote the Volkskrant about his previous Bimhuis performance. Again, this time, he brings the legendary, almost 80 year old, Hammond-organist Dr. Lonnie Smith.
