Living by Lanterns offers a platform to ten contemporary jazz innovators from New York and Chicago. On the basis of obscure treasures in the Sun Ra archive, drummer Mike Reed and vibes player Jason Adasiewicz have composed rich orchestral music. Instead of the cosmic philosophy of the flamboyant band leader Sun Ra, they have concentrated on his free, experimental approach tothe jazz orchestra. Samples of his voice and analog keyboard float around in the music of Living by Lanterns. ‘It’s joyful enough to make a visitor from Saturn smile’ (Downbeat).
